The Subnational Public Finance Management Programme in Peru, in collaboration with the government of Peru’s La Libertad region and local government of the city of Trujillo, held an international seminar in February 2019 on “Sewing prosperity: Public Finance Management challenges in the north Peruvian macro-region.”
The seminar was an opportunity for reflection and exchange for the subnational governments of Peru's northern macro-region that underwent Public Finance Management evaluations in 2016–2018.
Peru’s National Assembly of Regional Governments (ANGR), with support from the SECO-funded Subnational PFM programme implemented by the Basel Institute’s office in Lima, has organised a successful first meeting of the country’s current regional governors and those newly elected to govern for the period 2019–2022.
Experts in law enforcement, money laundering investigations and cryptocurrencies will meet in the Hague on 6–7 March 2019 for the 3rd Global Conference on Criminal Finances and Cryptocurrencies.
Co-founded and co-organised by the Basel Institute on Governance, the conference is hosted by Europol and Interpol on alternate years. The 2019 conference will be held at the Europol headquarters.
The Basel Institute's Head of Governance Research, Dr. Claudia Baez Camargo, was in London on 28-29 January for the launch of the DFID-funded Global Integrity Anti-Corruption Evidence Programme (GI-ACE).
At the upcoming UN Conference of States Parties (CoSP) to the UNCAC in Panama City during 25-29 November 2013, the Basel Institute will officially launch its most recent publication, Emerging Trends in Asset Recovery (see above under “Recent publication”). The book will be distributed at our information booth where we look forward to welcoming you.

The Institute presented a paper on “Old regime habits die hard: Institutional challenges to participatory governance in post-authoritarian Mexico” at the ECPR General Conference in Bordeaux, France (September). The paper presents findings from field research conducted in the context of the Institute’s two-year, EU funded research project on the linkages between corruption, governance and social accountability.
On 12 May 2014, at the 23rd Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) in Vienna, ICAR joined experts from the International Association of Prosecutors and the Korean Institute on Criminology to support a workshop on challenges of international cooperation in criminal matters.
On 24 April, the Ukraine Anti-Corruption Action Centre, jointly with Ukrainska Prvada & GOPAC Ukraine, hosted an international conference to discuss and identify challenges relating to the recovery of assets stolen by former President Yanukovych and his associates, and thereby to initiate a (inter-) national dialogue to address these challenges. ICAR spoke on modalities for the return of stolen assets, alongside senior representatives from the Ukraine government and Canada, the European Union, Switzerland and the US, as well as specialist civil society organisations.
On April 2-9, ICAR hosted its first international workshop on the use of virtual currency to launder money. Held at the University of Basel, Switzerland, the workshop brought together public and private sector practitioners from countries such as France, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The workshop circled around a case study presented by the FBI, presentations by ICAR experts and interactive group discussions to identify particular challenges and potential solutions for law enforcement.
