Within the context of a three-year initiative on "Mapping and Visualising Cross-Border Crime” funded by the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme and launched in 2014, experts from the Basel Institute’s International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) and the Journalism Development Network (JDN) conducted their 6th and final workshop on Financial Investigations and Asset Recovery – “Follow the money” in February 2019.

We are delighted to announce that the partnership between the Basel Institute and the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) of Tanzania in support of Tanzania’s efforts to combat corruption and recover stolen assets will continue.

We are delighted to welcome the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) as a core donor to the Basel Institute’s International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR). With the three-year grant, Norway joins the UK, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Jersey in supporting ICAR’s Operational Strategy 2017–20.

Experts in law enforcement, money laundering investigations and cryptocurrencies will meet in the Hague on 6–7 March 2019 for the 3rd Global Conference on Criminal Finances and Cryptocurrencies.

Co-founded and co-organised by the Basel Institute on Governance, the conference is hosted by Europol and Interpol on alternate years. The 2019 conference will be held at the Europol headquarters.

The World Economic Forum has joined IACA, OECD, TRACE, Transparency International and the Universidad de San Andrés as a founding institutional partner of the ICCA.

The Basel Institute and Swisspeace are co-financing a research project that looks into the role of anti-corruption agencies in the state building process of fragile nations. The co-financed position is held by Sergio Gemperle who has studied Political Science and Political Geography at the University of Berne and holds a M.A. in International Relations and Development Policy from the Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.

The Counsel of the University of Basel has officially approved the association agreement between the University of Basel and the Basel Institute on Governance. The Basel Institute, along with only a very small group of other independent Swiss organizations, including the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute and Swisspeace, is now an official “associated institute” of the University of Basel.

At the upcoming UN Conference of States Parties (CoSP) to the UNCAC in Panama City during 25-29 November 2013, the Basel Institute will officially launch its most recent publication, Emerging Trends in Asset Recovery (see above under “Recent publication”). The book will be distributed at our information booth where we look forward to welcoming you.

The Basel Institute has joined the recently established Swiss National Compliance Roundtable. The aim of the Roundtable is to develop national standards of education and training for persons interested in Compliance with a view to raising and setting standards and qualifications.

A presentation will be made at the end of January 2014 to interested parties in the private sector, government and academia, which will outline the proposals for further work.

At the invitation of the OECD, the Basel Institute on Governance has joined the Advisory Board, which has been established to advise on the OECD’s Thematic Study on Business Integrity in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The first meeting was held in Istanbul in October, with all Advisory Board members giving input into the questionnaire, which will form the basis for the first part of this study.
