Innovative governance approaches to make development goals sustainable
On 21 June 2017, the Basel Institute will participate in an event during the 35th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva on innovative approaches to the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The panel session, which is organised by the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan, will host participants from the different Permanent Missions in Geneva, international organisations, civil society organisations, NGOs based in Geneva, as well as other stakeholders attending the HRC 35th session. Its main focus will be to show how innovative approaches to governance promote the implementation of SDGs, good governance and human rights by using Azerbaijan and Kenya as case examples.
The Basel Institute’s research department, headed by Claudia Baez-Camargo, will speak about the role of best practices in good governance in the implementation of the SDGs. Based on the Institute’s research focus, the importance of contextualisation and how this supports the development of sustainable governance approaches and ultimately the implementation of the SDGs will be highlighted. Contextualising, or ‘working with the grain’, is about creating an appropriate fit between the adopted governance approach and the context in which this is implemented. Taking into consideration contextual factors makes governance approaches more effective and sustainable.
