Workshops: Citizenship in times of change – East-African perspectives
The University of Basel's Centre for African Studies, the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute at the University of Freiburg and the Basel Institute on Governance are organising two workshops to deepen the exchange on issues of citizenship, with a focus on East Africa.
Active citizen participation is a key ingredient in the fight against corruption, but citizenship is not a stable condition. It is subject to change and has to be fought for. Citizenship can dwindle in phases of public disengagement, motivated by disenchantment with a government (for instance, as a result of corruption) or because of active exclusion.
The workshops will address how citizenship is affected by crisis, violent conflict and the changing formations of political entities, and how these fluctuations can offer opportunities for mobilisation or lead to new constraints on civil rights.
