Mavuto Bamusi joined the Basel Institute in August 2024 as Specialist, Corruption Prevention in Malawi.
Mavuto is a democratic governance expert and public policy analyst with 18 years hands-on experience supporting civil society accountability and democratic governance interventions. Mavuto is a practitioner in political economy analysis, policy advocacy, human rights activism and action-research for anti-corruption programming.
Mavuto holds a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Malawi. He has worked with the Malawi School of Government as a Training Specialist, Public Sector Capacity Building Consultant and as Senior Lecturer in International Relations, Regional Integration and Business Management. Mavuto has also worked as a Special Advisor to the Malawi Government, with a focus on strengthening civil society and governance issues.
Mavuto has experience working with the civil society organisations Malawi Economic Justice Network on public finance management accountability, and the Human Rights Consultative Committee on human rights and democracy consolidation. Mavuto also has experience working with international organisations such as Norwegian Church Aid, where he was Programme Manager for resource governance and extractive industries transparency interventions.
