The community focuses on the real-world challenges practitioners face when investigating, tracing, freezing, managing and recovering cryptoassets. Its activities include:

1. Case-based practitioner sessions Members and invited experts present real cases, investigative approaches and lessons learned. Sessions are designed to encourage open discussion and practical problem-solving among peers.
2. Practical training A dedicated training series helps members strengthen technical and operational skills in areas identified by the community.
3. Peer exchange Regular online interaction allows practitioners to ask questions, share experience and build relationships with counterparts across the region.
4. In-person meetings Members have opportunities to connect in person alongside relevant conferences and regional events. In September 2026, practitioners from across Latin America will take part in a dedicated workshop in Luxembourg organised together with the UK National Crime Agency as a side event to the 10th Global Conference on Criminal Finances and Cryptoassets.
5. Public–private dialogue Selected activities involve relevant private-sector specialists where their knowledge can help public authorities understand tools, services and emerging risks. The community’s operational direction and public-sector focus remain independent.

The initiative operates primarily in Spanish, with interpretation support in English and Portuguese where needed.

Cryptoasset use has expanded rapidly across Latin America, driven by factors including inflation, currency instability, remittances and demand for digital financial services. At the same time, criminal use of cryptoassets is becoming more sophisticated and increasingly crosses national borders.

Investigators, prosecutors and financial intelligence specialists therefore need practical skills, trusted contacts and faster access to regional experience. The community helps practitioners learn from cases beyond their own jurisdictions and strengthen cooperation across Latin America.

The community is coordinated by a Basel Institute Senior Asset Recovery Specialist based in the region and working closely with public authorities across Latin America. Its activities are shaped by the needs, experience and priorities of participating practitioners.
