Training Peruvian judges to deal with the Odebrecht scandal
The Basel Institute on Governance and the Peruvian Judiciary organized a training seminar on anti-corruption and asset recovery aimed at building capacity in innovative methods to fight cross border corruption. The four day training is the first of a series of capacity building events requested by the Peruvian authorities and was delivered to the recently installed unit of judges specialized in corruption of public officials, created by the judicial authorities to deal with the Odebrecht scandal.
The training specifically focused on enhancing the capacity of the specialized judges in relation to confiscation typologies and legal avenues to fight corruption performed by multinational enterprises in the procurement sector. The training also addressed subject matters such as asset recovery, international Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) and liability of legal persons.
Dr. Susana Castañeda Otsu, National Coordinator of the Specialized System for Corruption of Public Officials and the Basel Institute’s Country Manager for Peru, Dr. Oscar Solorzano held opening speeches and the Supreme Judge of the Peruvian Supreme Court of Justice, Dr. César San Martín Castro, was subsequently invited as a keynote speaker at the seminar.
The training seminar is part of a series of capacity building activities carried out by the Swiss Cooperation Public Finance Management (PFM) Subnational Program, funded by the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Cooperation (SECO) and implemented by the Basel Institute on Governance.
