Tackling crypto-related crime: turning investigation and advocacy into impact

How investigative journalists and civil society organisations expose risks, support law enforcement action and strengthen accountability in the use of virtual assets

The expansion of virtual assets has reshaped financial ecosystems, bringing innovation but also significant risks linked to fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes. Alongside governments and international organisations, civil society organisations, research institutions and investigative journalists play a critical role in identifying abuses, raising awareness and promoting accountability.

This second webinar in a two-part series co-organised by the Basel Institute on Governance and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe focuses on how non-state actors contribute to tackling crypto-related crime and strengthening responsible governance of virtual assets.

What the webinar will cover

The session will explore the distinct roles of civil society organisations and investigative journalists in exposing risks and supporting more effective responses to financial crime involving cryptocurrencies. Discussions will address:

  • How investigative journalists and civil society actors contribute to understanding and detecting crypto-related financial crime
  • Examples of impactful investigations, analytical reports and advocacy initiatives
  • The importance of awareness raising among the general public, including on risks such as investment fraud and scams
  • How findings and evidence can be translated into law enforcement action, policy recommendations and informed public debate
  • The challenges and risks faced by non-state actors working in this field and ways to address them

Through practical examples and case studies, participants will gain insight into how investigative work, research and advocacy can complement official efforts, strengthen transparency and foster accountability in the use of virtual assets.
