The [Ilomba mine case](https://www.business-humanrights.org/es/%C3%BAltimas-noticias/malawi-civil-society-oppose-mining-license-renewal-of-mining-company-with-allegations-of-corruption-hanging-over-it/) was first brought to light by civil society members of the Malawi Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (MWEITI), after a recording of officials discussing the license behind normal channels went viral. Civil society members then requested an investigation be made, and MWEITI referred the matter to ACB in December 2021.

The investigation uncovered not only bribery, but also money laundering and systemic weaknesses in the licence renewal process. Its ripple effects have since driven wider prevention measures, including a [new MWEITI anti-corruption strategy](https://www.mweiti.gov.mw/documents/uploads/2024-11/MWEITI%20Anti-Corruption%20Strategy.pdf), strengthening of institutional integrity committees (IICs) at the Ministry of Mining and the Malawi Mining Regulatory Authority, and improvements to the mining licences approval process.

The speakers will share first-hand insights from the investigation and the prevention work that followed, reflecting on how enforcement and prevention can reinforce each other and offering practical lessons for practitioners seeking to build similar collaboration between EITI platforms, anti-corruption agencies and civil society in their own countries.

## The speakers

- **Patricia Mkadawire**, Acting Principal Investigations Officer, Anti-Corruption Bureau of Malawi
- **Jimmy Mtafya**, Chief Corruption Prevention Officer, Anti-Corruption Bureau of Malawi
- **Leonard Mushani**, Secretariat Manager, MWEITI

The discussion will be moderated by **Dr Amanda Cabrejo le Roux**, Deputy Director, Green Corruption, Basel Institute on Governance.

## Participate
The meeting will be held on Zoom with simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Spanish.
