FairBiz: Promoting a Fair Business Environment in ASEAN

UNDP’s FairBiz project for “Promoting a Fair Business Environment in ASEAN”, funded by the UK Government, aims to promote fair, transparent and predictable business environments in dynamic ASEAN countries. By working with governments, civil society and the business sector, the project strives to foster a level playing field for business competition where:

  • A culture of transparency and integrity in the public and private sectors is nurtured.
  • Responsible and sustainable business practices are encouraged.
  • Corruption risks are minimised and the application of justice is fair.

Applying a Collective Action approach, FairBiz along with Alliance for Integrity, conducted a training for women entrepreneurs on integrity and procurement in Indonesia. With local project partners in Malaysia, FairBiz created a new training programme which was piloted in two multinationals and can be used to bring new management techniques to SMEs in the MNCs supply chains.

In Vietnam, FairBiz worked closely with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in the development of the Viet Nam Business Integrity Index (VBII), which can help companies to assess the level of their integrity and improve internal policies to ensure higher transparency.

Finally, FairBiz partnered with CoST – the Infrastructure Transparency Initiative in supporting the public procurement authorities in Thailand and Indonesia to publish transparent data on their public tenders. Applying CoST’s methodology of data disclosure to infrastructure procurement helped governments better control the procurement process.

Knowledge products of the project include an Integrity Self-Assessment Toolkit for Businesses co-developed with the Integrity Initiative in the Philippines, and a Business Integrity Toolkit for Young Entrepreneurs to help start-ups prevent, detect and take action against unfair business practices, in collaboration with UNDP Youth Co:Lab.

The FairBiz project concluded in December 2022.
